Culturalist: March 2018

Where to be this month

Help the Keep Little Rock Beautiful organization keep Little Rock beautiful by embracing your inner Banksy. Join the organization for Art in the Park this month at Allsopp Park, where you’ll create paint from living moss harvested in the area and use it to show off your graffiti skills. The canvas? A four-sided concrete pier that you’ll adorn with quotes, designs and images that will come alive as moss continues to grow from the paint mixture. And they say art simply imitates life. Soooo … there are other reasons to sign up for the Beer & Bagel Off-Road Race at Hazel Valley Ranch near Fayetteville: gorgeous Ozark views, a challenging 4-mile jaunt over the river and through the woods, camaraderie with fine folks. But for folks who need a bit more motivation to hit the trail, there’s this: the promise of bagels, ice-cold beer and bowls of chili at the finish line. We’ll race you there. (beerandbagel.com)

It’s not an inconspicuous thing, an 8×10 large-format camera. You’d think that if you were, say, an off-the-grid survivalist or a ghost-town-inhabiting monk, you might shy away from a photographer who approached you with such a contraption in tow and asked to take your portrait. And yet that’s exactly what photographer Alec Soth does. His portraits, which have been exhibited far and wide (Milan, Helsinki and whatnot) and collected by some of our country’s preeminent institutions (MoMA, the Whitney and the like), cut to the very core of his subject’s humanity, creating images from which you can’t turn away. He’ll discuss all of this and more during his artist talk at UALR’s Windgate Center of Art and Design, where, if you manage to snag a seat, you’ll be surrounded by all manner of googly-eyed local photographers who consider Soth (rhymes with ‘both’) to be The Ultimate. As our own photographer, Arshia, says, it’s swoon city. (ualr.edu/cals/events)
