Banking on our state's finest rivers, lakes and swimming holes
We’re not just talking any ol’ ponds or streams here, folks. These are truly Arkansas’ most superlative bodies of water—the biggest, the coldest, the most hashtag-worthy. And while we don’t intend to make waves, there’s certain to be some debate regarding any definitive listing. Just ask Jim Petersen, a former hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, who assisted us in our research. “There is a saying among hydrologists about determining the locations of ‘top of the bank’ of a stream,” Jim told us. “If you ask three hydrologists … you will get five different opinions. That applies to some of these categories as well.” In any case, whether we’re kayaking the state’s rapidest river or swimming in its deepest lake, there’s no place we’d rather be this time of year than out on the water.
