Best as we can figure, there’s a magic to art. Because in the strictest sense, anyone could do it. Anyone can take the classes. Buy the books. Purchase apples and empty bottles to make a still life. But for most of us who’ve ever unceremoniously squashed a set of brushes against the canvas or molded an overly elaborate ashtray, there’s some intangible factor in the equation that proves forever elusive. With that in mind, we turned to six artists from across the spectrum—artists who’ve succeeded in channeling that artistic drive into something special, something magical—and asked them to explain: Where does it come from?
