Culturalist: September 2018

Where to be this month

Hot Air Balloon State Championship in downtown Harrison (

Listening to live music under twinkling cafe lights as dusk falls over the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks? There’s no better way to spend a late-summer eve. Add in booze and food prepared by the toques behind some of our fave NWA eateries—28 Springs, Local Flavor, Cafe Rue Orleans, Bordinos—and the folks behind Chefs in the Garden might just have a hard time getting us to leave. It’s fall, y’all. (Fiiiiinally.) Welcome our state’s fairest season by watching a Delta sunset silhouette one of the Toltec Mounds. It’s likely folks have been doing the exact same thing in the exact same spot for, oh, 1,000-plus years—the Plum Bayou Culture constructed several of the park’s 18 mounds to line up with the setting sun during equinoxes.(

It’ll be hard to sample your way through IndiaFest’s labyrinth of delicacy-proffering food stalls, what with all the henna tattoos, sari-draping demos, dancing, live music and the like that’ll be brightening up the River Market Pavilions and First Security Amphitheater. But where there’s a will, there’s a way—a very delicious way. (
